We’re starting a sermon series in which we will begin to articulate some of the vision and dreams that we are discerning God has in mind for Pioneer Church. Jeff preached this morning and offered “testimony” (the truth as we know it) about how we have seen God’s presence in Pioneer Church.
The lectionary text, Revelation 21:1-6, contained this affirmation:
“See, the home of God is among mortals. God will dwell with them as their God; they will be God’s peoples, and God will be with them.”
So, on the occasion of our 5th anniversary (five months!) with Pioneer, we offer our “Five Month Report,” our testimony of what God’s been up to since we’ve been here.
FIVE MONTH REPORT
Some of the places we have seen God at work in and through Pioneer Church:
1. We survived our first Northeast Ohio winter! We had hoped for White Christmas, but were surprised by White Easter instead!
2. Worship experiences in our first 5 months. We started the first Sunday of Advent and it hasn’t stopped since!
Advent & Christmas – Choir cantata, children’s service, Christmas Eve
Lent & Easter – Ash Wednesday service, Pioneer’s first healing service, Palm Sunday (Boy was that incredible! Telling the story in Scripture, music, and story from Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to his crufixion), Maundy Thursday with intimate communion by intinction, and an Easter Sunday that truly was a celebration of the resurrection.
Youth Sunday and Confirmation two weeks ago and
Last week’s service with leadership by our Men’s Group
We’ve had some inspiring, fresh, and moving worship experiences in these five months, and truly God was in our midst!
3. We have had other worship experiences as well…
We have had four memorial services in these five months, from a young mother to those whose lives were full and rich. We remember Don, Sapiah, Helen, and Harvey, and give thanks for their lives and the memorable ways their services witnessed to the resurrection of Christ.
We’ve also had our first wedding, with three more to follow soon. With joy we celebrated the marriage of Michelle and Wesley, and recognized the spirit of God in those tender and sacred moments.
4. So many exciting and renewed programs in the life of the church, each filled with so many “God moments”:
Re-starting the Youth Group with so many wonderful young people who enjoy being together and are developing a real sense of community. They worked together so well to lead the congregation in what so many are calling “the best Youth Sunday ever.”
Teaching Sunday School classes and having opportunities to think new thoughts, explore issues of faith in new and fresh ways, and to stretch and grow in our understandings.
Wednesday Night Live – what can we say when 70+ people come out for dinner, fellowship, and program? Our Lenten series exploring Christian Practices was a soul-feeder for us, and the program on the new Pioneer-Africa Well Project inspired us all and motivated us to commit to building 10 wells by the end of the year.
The new “Monday Prayers at Noon” that so many have joined in. We gather at noon each Monday to pray for the mission of the PC(USA) around the world, to pray for those in our congregation with particular needs, and to read the names listed on a page of the directory each week – praying for these members of the Pioneer family, that they would know the presence of God in a special way that day in the week ahead.
And today began the third New Member Seminar in our five months here. People are seeing God at work here and wanting to be part of it.
5. We’ve seen God’s presence in our hospital visits, in the nursing homes, and in the countless acts of care and concern that so many in this congregation perform. From the Deacons surrounding families in times of grief or visiting shut-ins with Easter lilies, to members taking dinner and worship CDs to Donna who can no longer come to church because of her loss of eyesight, helping her continue to be part of the community. Or in the lives of Dani, Nick and their new baby Rebecca, visitors to Pioneer who after their second visit here (with Dani being “great with child”) Dani went into labor – seven weeks early. They have been surrounded by care and support by this congregation – and they’re not even members. Yet. They’re in the new member seminar that started today! These acts of care and compassion are definite God things.
6. God is working in amazing ways through our leaders – our Session, our Deacons, and our Staff. We are truly blessed to have such amazing people leading us in right paths…
7. And finally, Kerri and I have participated in about a dozen Listening Groups – members sharing what Pioneer Church means to them and a their dreams and visions for the future of our church. In the stories told and the dreams shared we have seen the presence of God in Pioneer Church. There are a few more groups happening in the next few weeks (it’s important for us to hear from the snow birds, too!), but we will soon begin sharing what we’ve heard from you and how we understand God leading Pioneer Church into the future. It’s an exciting time because as we have seen, God is in our midst, and we know with confidence that God will continue to be with us.
The name of the church says a lot: Pioneer Memorial Presbyterian Church.
PIONEER – This is a church that moves ahead, is forward looking, and is eager to start down the path of where God is leading us next.
MEMORIAL – But we are also a church shaped by memory. Memory of the many ways God has been present in this church in the past, and with memories of the many who have walked those journeys before us.
As we discern God’s leading in this New Day for Pioneer Church, we do so confident that God’s home will be among us, that God will continue to be present with us.
